Pursuant to RCW 35.21.015, the City of Bellevue authorized creation of an Independent Salary Commission with the authority to set the salary of the members of the City Council.
In June 2024, the council appointed five people to serve on the commission and recommend a salary schedule by December 2024. The commission held several public meetings in the summer and fall and issued a resolution and filed a salary schedule on Oct. 30, 2024.

The commission is specifically charged with:
- Studying both the relationship of salaries to the duties of mayor, deputy mayor and councilmembers and the costs personally incurred by councilmembers in performing such duties.
- Studying the relationship of the Bellevue City Council salaries and benefits to the salaries and benefits of councilmembers in surrounding cities and other current market conditions.
- Establishing salary and benefits by either increasing or decreasing the existing salary and benefits of each position by an affirmative vote of at least three members.
- Reviewing and filing a salary and compensation schedule with the City Clerk. (Ordinance 6306 and Ordinance 6322).
