The NE 8th Street Complete Streets Safety Improvements project will enhance safety for people walking and rolling along NE 8th Street in the Crossroads area. The effort began with a Road Safety Assessment in 2021, followed by a Safe Streets Corridor study in 2023.
This roadway segment is part of the city’s High Injury Network – the portion of city streets where most fatal and serious-injury crashes occur. It is also located near frequent service transit and does not meet the bike level-of-service target established in the Mobility Implementation Plan. This made it a strong candidate for evaluation as part of the city’s Road Safety Assessments (RSAs). During the RSA, staff and community members raised concerns, such as the lack of bicycle facilities, long distances between signalized crosswalks and high vehicle speeds. These concerns helped shape the design for this project.
Project Description:
This project will install buffered bike lanes on NE 8th Street by replacing one general-purpose lane in each direction:
- Eastbound from 156th Avenue NE to 160th Avenue NE
- Westbound from 158th Avenue NE to 160th Avenue NE
It will widen existing bike shoulders into full-width bike lanes on NE 8th Street from 160th Avenue NE to 164th Avenue NE.
This project also includes a new crosswalk with flashing pedestrian beacons on NE 8th Street, just east of 160th Avenue NE.
