The City of Bellevue Transportation Department is starting work on a project to improve safety on 132nd Avenue NE between NE 40th Street and NE 60th Street in Bridle Trails. We’ll be upgrading two existing crosswalks with flashing beacons (RRFBs) and installing two new radar feedback signs. These changes aim to make this road safer for people walking, rolling and riding horses by making it easier for people driving to see them crossing the road, and encouraging people driving to slow down.
Project Description
- Add flashing beacons to two existing crosswalks along 132nd Avenue NE at NE 51st Place and just north of NE 40th Street.
- Install two radar feedback signs, one facing northbound and one facing southbound. The location of these signs will be determined during the design phase.
Timeline
Design of the project will start in winter 2026. The construction for this project is not yet funded; the construction schedule will be determined once funding becomes available.
Background
The city has heard from Bridle Trails residents about speeding and safety concerns on this stretch of 132nd Avenue NE. In 2021, signing upgrades were made to the existing crosswalks to improve visibility. Adding flashing beacons to these crosswalks will further improve visibility. Also, radar feedback sign locations were evaluated against many other candidate locations across the city and prioritized due to vehicle speeds, community feedback and crash history along the corridor.
