The NE 40th Street Improvements — 140th Avenue NE to 148th Avenue NE project will improve safety for people walking and rolling along this road. This project was selected as part of the 2018 Bridle Trails Neighborhood Enhancement Program (NEP).
Project Description
As part of this project, the city plans to:
- Build a new six-foot wide sidewalk along the north side of NE 40th Street from 140th Ave NE to 145th Ave NE
- Construct retaining walls where necessary
- Add a new crosswalk at 142nd Place NE
- Build new five-foot wide bike lanes on both sides of the road along NE 40th Street
- Grind and overlay (repave) NE 40th Street from 140th Avenue NE to 148th Avenue NE
- Add storm drainage improvements
- Build four-foot wide planters, where feasible, with landscaping and irrigation
In late summer 2025, the department will implement interim treatments to improve safety as we pursue funding for project construction. The treatments include:
- Resurfacing and restriping the 140th Ave NE and NE 40th St intersection. New pavement markings will narrow lanes and create wider shoulders.
- New edge striping along NE 40th St between 140th Ave NE and 146th Pl NE will narrow vehicle lanes to encourage slower speeds.
- Street lighting adjustments along NE 40th St between 140th Ave NE and 148th Ave NE. Puget Sound Energy will be changing street light fixtures to create more uniform lighting and add two new street lights.
- Intersection warning signs will be added on NE 40th St in the vicinity of 142nd Pl.
