The City of Bellevue Transportation Department has heard from residents in Cougar Mountain and Lakemont about speeding concerns on 166th Way SE between SE Cougar Mountain Way and SE 73rd Street.
To respond to these concerns, this portion of 166th Way SE was evaluated against all other requests for traffic calming in the city—a list of over 100 locations—and was rated highly for action given traffic volumes, vehicle speeds and proximity to parks and schools.
The project team is currently gathering feedback from people who live nearby and users of Cougar Mountain Regional Wildlife Park Survey to help guide the design of traffic calming treatments. Often, multiple treatments are implemented along a corridor to maximize the potential speed reduction impact. Treatments will be selected based on design considerations, community feedback, desired goals and budget. The treatments being considered include:
- Speed cushions
- Raised crosswalks
- Curb extensions
- Stationary speed radar signs
- Neighborhood entrance treatments
- Shared shoulder
Schedule
- Winter 2025: Community engagement and project design begins
- 2025: Design alternatives selected; finalize design
- Construction is anticipated to occur between 2026-2028 as funding becomes available.
