The City of Bellevue Transportation Department is currently designing a project to improve the safety of people walking and rolling at two locations along NE 8th Street at the cross streets of 95th Avenue NE and 98th Avenue NE. Project locations were identified for improvements through the city’s Crosswalk Program and prioritized based on community feedback, NE 8th Street traffic volumes, as well as the crossings’ proximity to transit stops and the high-density area of downtown.
Description
This project will:
- Install new pedestrian flashing beacons at existing crosswalks along NE 8th St. at 95th Ave. NE and 98th Ave. NE
- Upgrade curb ramps to improve accessibility and comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
- Install a new crosswalk median at NE 8th St. and 98th Ave. NE
- Upgrade existing sidewalk on the south side of NE 8th St. just west of 98th Ave. NE
New crosswalk median at NE 8th St and 98th Ave NE:
Installing a new median will replace the existing eastbound left-turn pocket on NE 8th St. The purpose of the median is to provide a safer refuge for people using the crosswalk while still allowing left turns to Park Road.
The city is proposing a median island at the crosswalk based on the factors below:
- Medians enhance safety and comfort for people walking and rolling through a crosswalk.
- Medians can provide traffic calming along NE 8th Street.
- The intersection experiences low turning volumes from NE 8th St. to Park Road.
Project schedule
Design will continue through 2025 with construction anticipated to begin spring 2026 pending the availability of project funding.
Funding
The estimated project cost is $1.1 million. Project funding is provided by the Neighborhood Safety, Connectivity and Congestion Levy.
