The City of Bellevue Transportation Department is working on a project to improve the safety of people walking and rolling. It is currently in the design phase — plans are about 60% complete. This project will construct two new crosswalks. One is located at the 2800 block of Bel-Red Road, at an existing trail, and the other is at NE 24th Street and 171st Avenue NE.

At this location, the project will:

    • Build a new crosswalk
    • Install a new traffic light that can be triggered by people using the crosswalk
    • Install new lighting
    • Pave the existing trail from the intersection of NE 28th Street and 160th Avenue NE to Bel-Red Road, and from Bel-Red Road to where the trail meets NE 28th Street (see map)
    • Reconstruct sidewalk on the northwest side of Bel-Red Road and add sidewalk on the southeast side of Bel-Red Road

NE 24th Street and 171st Avenue NE

At this location, the project will:

    • Build a new crosswalk
    • Install new pedestrian flashing beacon (RRFB)
    • Build a new bus pad at the existing bus stop
    • Reconstruct and extend sidewalk on the south side of NE 24th Street and add sidewalk on north side of NE 24th Street
    • Grind and overlay (repave) the road in the project area

    Project schedule

The 60% design for this project is complete. Construction is anticipated to take place in fall 2024.

    Funding

This project has an estimated construction cost of $1.1 million. The improvements at NE 24th Street and 171st Avenue SE are funded by the Neighborhood Safety, Connectivity and Congestion Levy. The improvements at the 2800 block of Bel-Red Road are funded by the 2023-2029 Capital Investment Program.
