Bellevue is testing innovative Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology to give drivers real-time alerts before reaching busy crosswalks. We are seeking 10–20 Bellevue residents to participate in a driving study led by the University of Washington (UW) Human Factors team.
Volunteers will be compensated $100 for their participation.

Bellevue is testing innovative Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology to give drivers real-time alerts before reaching busy crosswalks. V2X technology is a way for cars, traffic signals, and people with smartphones to talk to each other wirelessly. It helps everyone share information to keep each other safer on the road.
Mid-block crosswalks, or crosswalks located between intersections, can be high-risk areas. Drivers may not always see a pedestrian activating a crosswalk signal, especially under low-visibility or high-traffic conditions.
As part of the federal Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant, the City of Bellevue is deploying and testing Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) cellular technology to bridge the sight gap between drivers and peopling walking, biking and rolling in city crosswalks.

| Step 1: Pedestrian activation | When a pedestrian pushes the crosswalk button, an instant digital signal is broadcasted securely over the cellular network. |
| Step 2: In-vehicle alert | Drivers using a connected smartphone app receive an immediate visual and audible alert inside their vehicle: "Pedestrian Ahead." |
| Step 3: Extra reaction time | Early warning gives drivers critical extra seconds to slow down comfortably, preventing sudden braking and reducing crash risks. |
Participate in the Study
We are seeking 10–20 Bellevue residents to participate in a driving study led by the University of Washington (UW) Human Factors team. Selection and notifications to selected participants will begin in September 2026.

Project Map & Test Location
A total of 27 intersections across Bellevue are being equipped with this V2X safety technology. The driver study route focuses on corridors in Downtown Bellevue near City Hall and the Bellevue Downtown Light Rail Station where many people walk, bike and roll.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the technology track my car?
No. All data collected during the study is strictly used for safety research and is completely anonymized to protect participant privacy.
Do I need a special or newer car to participate?
No. The alerts function via a mobile app (TravelSafely) on a standard smartphone, meaning any vehicle can be used.
When will I know if I am selected for the study?
The University of Washington research team will review interest form submissions and start reaching out to selected participants starting in September 2026.
