The Bellevue Fire Explorer program is designed for youth ages 14-21 who want to challenge themselves, develop leadership skills and explore one of the most rewarding careers in public service.
Sponsored by the City of Bellevue and Scouting America, the program is provided at no cost and offers an inside look at the fire service through hands-on training, mentorship and real-world experiences alongside Bellevue firefighters. Whether you're considering a career in firefighting, emergency medical services or you're still undecided, you'll gain skills that will serve you for life.
More Than a Career Program
The Bellevue Fire Explorer Program isn't just about learning how firefighters do their jobs. It's about discovering what you're capable of.
As an Explorer, you'll learn to think critically, communicate effectively, work as part of a team and lead with integrity. You'll be challenged physically and mentally while building confidence, responsibility and resilience in a support environment.
You'll train in areas such as:
- Fire suppression fundamentals
- Search and rescue
- Hose, ladder and equipment operations
- Incident command and radio communications
- Physical fitness and wellness
- Public education and community outreach
- Leadership and teamwork
Every drill is designed to help you grow as a leader while introducing the skills and professionalism expected of today's firefighters.

No previous experience is required. What matters most is your attitude, your commitment and your willingness to grow.
What to Expect
Explorer drills are typically held one weekend a month for approximately four hours at the Bellevue Public Safety Training Center. Additional opportunities throughout the year may including community events, department demonstrations, public education activities and specialized training.
Explorers are expected to attend at least 80% of scheduled drills. Missed drills may be made up through participation in department approved events or community outreach activities.
Prospective applicants are encouraged to attend up to three Explorers meetings before applying to meet current Explorers, observe drills and determine whether the program is a good fit.
How to Apply
Recruitment is held annually in August. To apply, submit the following to FireExplorer@bellevuewa.gov:
- Letter of interest describing why you'd like to become a Bellevue Fire Explorer
- Current resume
Selected applicants will be invited to participate in a competitive selection process that includes:
- Recorded interview
- Panel interview
- Sports physical
- Fitness assessment
Preference will be given to applicants who live within the Bellevue Fire Department's service area, including the cities of Bellevue, Medina, Clyde Hill and Newcastle and the towns of Beaux Art, Hunts Point and Yarrow Point.
