We all know far too well that this past year has brought many new challenges. Despite these challenges we’ve all been doing our best to protect ourselves and our loved ones. As many are working from home or generally remaining indoors, I ask you to take a moment to check smoke alarm batteries, confirming that each one is working properly. This is also a great time to develop or update your household’s emergency plans for evacuation and sheltering.

It is important to remember that the leading cause of fires in the home are due to unattended cooking. As you prepare more meals at home please take caution to never leave the area while appliances are on and cooking. Also, try to avoid cooking on a high setting, whenever possible.

While we wait for this environment to change please consider your household’s safety not only in response to Covid-19, but to fire and natural disaster impacts as well. I also encourage you to think about others in your neighborhood, or community that may require assistance with becoming prepared. Think about safely reaching out and making sure others are as prepared as you. If you need assistance with this planning process please reach out to our department and we are happy to do anything we can to help.
