    As part of the city's Environmental Stewardship Initiative, we support many forms of transportation-related greenhouse gas reductions, including electric vehicle technology. By 2030, more than 30% of the vehicles on Bellevue's streets are expected to be electric. The city is preparing for that by planning the addition of EV chargers on public and private property.

    Electric Vehicle Roadmap

    The EV Roadmap is the city's plan to guide the electric vehicle transition in Bellevue over the coming years. Our work includes providing public EV charging to those who do not have access to charging at home and to areas of Bellevue where charging is less likely to be driven by market forces.

    The project launched in fall 2023. We collected input from community members in September 2024. In late spring 2024, we will release potential locations for charging sites, chosen with input from the community. The EV Roadmap was completed in October of 2024.

    EV Roadmap Engagement

    EV Roadmap Engagement

    Outreach for the EV Roadmap was conducted in two phases. Phase I covered the development of the draft Roadmap and strategies from the launch of the project in December of 2023 to April 2024. Phase II covered the release of the draft strategies and draft roadmap to the public from July to September 2024.

    The EV Roadmap team made thousands of connections with community members through online tools and in-person events and used a variety of techniques to reach different cross sections of the public.

    Read the Engagement Report for a detailed overview of the input collected throughout the engagement process.

    Biking and Walking

    The 2009 Pedestrian and Bicycle Transportation Plan articulates a shared vision of a desirable future that remains relevant today. The Pedestrian and Bicycle Implementation Initiative is a complement of action-oriented efforts that will advance project designs and programs identified in the 2009 Ped-Bike Plan to make Bellevue a great place to walk and bike.

    In February 2015 the City Council initiated the initiative, which is guided by ten Program Principles. In May 2015 the Transportation Commission approved a detailed scope of work, which identifies seven primary tasks, associated sub-tasks and the staff from various departments who will work collaboratively to promote solutions in engineering, education, encouragement, evaluation and enforcement.

    Electric Vehicles

    The City of Bellevue owns and operates 15 electric vehicle charging stations available for public use at city facilities.  More electric vehicles and charging stations are appearing in the city every day, saving fuel and money.

    • Explore charging stations in Bellevue and other alternative fueling opportunities.
    • Go to the PSE website to find out more information about charging at home and maps of charging stations across the state.
    • To learn more about the benefits of electric vehicles, go to: Explaining Electric & Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles | US EPA.

    Get "Plug-In" Ready

    Electric-vehicle technology is a promising new opportunity to reduce emissions from Bellevue's largest single emissions sector – transportation. The city is continuously working to ensure that our community and region are prepared to transition to cleaner vehicles that reduce fuel consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and costs for residents and businesses.

    Working in collaboration with all levels of government, as well as businesses, nonprofits and community members, Bellevue is supporting the installation of charging stations throughout the region and helping to educate the community.

    City staff are working to:

    • Streamline the permitting process and reduce costs to homeowners and businesses for installing charging stations;
    • Increase the number of high-speed charging stations in Bellevue;
    • Identify code changes necessary for the installation of new charging stations;
    • Install publicly available charging stations at City Hall and major Parks facilities;
    • Provide education about electric vehicles, charging stations and the benefits of this technology;
    • Coordinate a regional EV infrastructure strategy with neighboring cities, King County and the state;
    • Procure electric vehicles and EV charging equipment for use in city fleets; and
    • Stay tuned to all developments in this emerging industry.
