The City of Bellevue is working on three projects to connect walkers, rollers and bikers to the Eastrail at NE 12th Street, Main Street and the crossing with the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trail.

The city is in the process of connecting two major regional trails to make walking, biking and rolling more convenient for everyone. The north-south Eastrail is under development, and will extend from Renton in the south to Snohomish County in the north. Portions of the trail are already open, including the north and south segments within Bellevue. The east-west Mountains to Sound Greenway Trail runs parallel to I-90 with substantial sections open, including from Seattle to Eastgate in Bellevue and east of Bellevue in Issaquah and beyond. These two trails cross in Bellevue on the south side of I-90, but they are at different grades and therefore do not intersect. This city project will create a connection on the north side of I-90 along the right-of-way of two city streets.

King County Parks is developing the Eastrail through Bellevue. The segment that crosses I-90 will use the existing steel railroad bridge and is currently in design for conversion to a trail, with opening anticipated in 2031. Included in the King County project will be a ramp connection to SE 32nd Street, a low-volume, dead end city street.

The city’s Eastrail to Mountains to Sound Regional Trails Connection project will:

construct improvements along the south side of SE 32nd Street to enhance conditions for people walking
add a rectangular rapid flashing beacon (RRFB) crosswalk at 118th Ave SE
construct a 12-14-foot-wide shared use path and a 5-foot-wide planter strip on the west side of 118th Avenue SE between SE 32nd Street and I-90/Mountains to Sound Greenway trail.

Funding

The estimated project cost is $6.2 million. The city received a $2.5 million grant from the Puget Sound Regional Council, with the remaining balance coming from city transportation and parks capital funds.
