With its distinctive curved pier and stunning views, Meydenbauer Bay Park is one of Bellevue’s most popular and iconic destinations. Per the park’s master plan, the city is now planning to expand the park’s connection with downtown.
The community has been weighing in on priorities for the park, which have informed the potential designs for the park’s expansion. Shared with community members at a meeting Monday, the designs are the subject of an online survey, available until July 15 at Engaging Bellevue. The project team will also take input Saturday, June 29, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Meydenbauer Bay Park.
Survey respondents can opt in for a chance to win free kayak, canoe or paddle board rentals for two from REI Boathouse in Meydenbauer Bay Park.
In 2010, the city adopted the Meydenbauer Bay Park and Land Use Plan, with considerable community input, to guide the park’s future development.
A first phase of development completed in 2019 added the pier (near the REI rental facility), expanded the beach of the old Meydenbauer Beach Park eightfold, restored the ravine and established the beginning of a pedestrian promenade. A beach house with restroom and showers was also added.
The city is now pursuing a second phase of expansion, guided by the 2010 plan and current input and city needs. The park will be expanded south along the shore, toward the intersection of 100th Avenue Northeast and Lake Washington Boulevard.
Over the past year, residents and people who work and play in Bellevue have shared a strong desire for improved amenities, additional parking and greater pedestrian and water access. Respondents will be asked more about the park improvements they want to see at meetings and events this summer and fall.
This design phase will last approximately another six months; the project timeline will be determined at the end of this design process.
