Closure needed to demolish Main Street Bridge, prep for new span
The state Department of Transportation (WSDOT) plans to close Interstate 405 in both directions between Southeast Eighth Street and Northeast Fourth Street to demolish the Main Street bridge over the freeway. During the scheduled 55-hour closure, significant delays are anticipated at times on surrounding city streets. Community members are encouraged to reschedule trips if possible or use an alternate route to reach their destination.
The closure, scheduled from 10 p.m., Friday, June 17, to 5 a.m., Monday, June 20, is needed for crews to safely demolish the bridge. It will be replaced with a new overpass that includes a multipurpose path for people who walk and bicycle.
Part of WSDOT’s I-405 Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes project, the bridge replacement is needed to make room for additional lanes on I-405. The closure, which has been delayed several times due to a lengthy concrete strike, is dependent on weather and other factors.
For the detour route, southbound drivers on I-405 will exit at the Northeast Fourth Street and travel south on 112th Avenue Northeast, re-entering the highway at Southeast Eighth Street. Northbound drivers will exit at Southeast Eighth Street and travel north on 116th Avenue Northeast, re-entering the highway at Northeast Fourth Street.
Prior to the I-405 closure, Main Street will be closed between 112th and 116th avenues for approximately five months, starting on Monday, June 13. A separate detour route using Northeast Fourth Street will be available for that closure.
