The state Department of Transportation's I-405 Renton to Bellevue Widening and Express Toll Lanes project will add new capacity to one of the state's most congested sections of highway. In general, it will add one new lane in each direction. City Transportation Department staff coordinate with WSDOT to address construction impacts on Bellevue streets and other issues.

    Main Street bridge

The new and improved Main Street bridge reopened to all modes of travel in January and features a 12-and-a-half-foot-wide multi-use path, an eight-foot-wide sidewalk, a bike lane, a landscaped barrier and railings.

    Background information

With the existing high occupancy vehicle lanes, the I-405 Renton to Bellevue project will create a dual express toll lane system between SR 167 in Renton and Northeast 6th Street in Bellevue. Combined with the existing express toll lanes between Bellevue and Lynnwood, and with the SR 167 HOT lanes, the end result will be a 40-mile system of express toll lanes.

In Bellevue, WSDOT will build a new southbound auxiliary lane in the I-90 to 112th Avenue Southeast vicinity, improve the Coal Creek Parkway interchange and reconstruct the bridges at Main Street and at 112th Avenue Southeast. Also, WSDOT will build parts of the Eastrail regional pedestrian and bicycle trail, including a new crossing over I-405 at the site of the former Wilburton rail bridge, in partnership with King County.
