Northwest Arts Center and the Kirkland Arts Center offer a high-quality afterschool arts program on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays at the Northwest Arts Center.

Clyde Hill students attending Bellewood Elementary School for the 2018-2019 school year can take the BSD bus from school directly to the Northwest Arts Center. Check with the school office/transportation to alert the school and confirm the bus number. Register for one program or all three by clicking on the registration links below.

Mondays:

  • Play with Clay: Instruction on basic techniques of "pinching," "coiling," and "rolling." Kids can make bowls, cups, vases, tiles, animals, and anything that their creative young minds can imagine.

Tuesdays:

  • Cartooning, Drawing, Printmaking: Learn the basics of expression drawing, line quality, constructing from the imagination, and exaggerating from life while exploring moods and animating actions. Media will include pencil, markers, charcoal, ink and watercolor, among others. Printmaking will also be introduced during this class.
  • Make Your Mark: Students will play with clay, explore printmaking, and design masks at this new afterschool art program. This program is specifically designed to support your child's art-making skills in a healthy environment. Make Your Mark encourages kids to decompress after school and explore feelings through art-making and journaling. At the end of the program, kids will share their experience and their art in a supportive culminating event with family and caregivers.

Wednesdays:

  • Creative Kids: Enhance your child's creativity with a variety of arts and crafts, pottery, drawing, painting, and games to get you moving. Activities take place in both indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Top Jr. Chef: Good food is our focus, and having fun is our priority! Our goal is to create basic quality food in a safe learning environment. Participants will learn to use fresh, healthy ingredients and the proper cooking methods for each recipe.

Art for Kids School Summer Camp (ages 5-8 and 9-12)
This program is designed to enhance your child's enjoyment of art and creative expression with an emphasis on acquainting children with various materials and enhancing their self-esteem. Students will complete eight projects which explore their creativity using pen and ink, charcoal, soft and oil pastels, and acrylics. All supplies are included. Join our professional art instructor for a week of art education! Please send a nut-free snack with your child and an old shirt to keep clothes from getting stained. Cartooning, Drawing and Printmaking for Kids (ages 6-12)
Create zany characters to drop into a story or make a statement. Distort, exaggerate, embellish, add drama and humor. Fledgling cartoonists will learn the basics of expression drawing, line quality, constructing from life while exploring moods and animating actions. Media will include pencil, markers, charcoal, ink and watercolors, among others.

Cartooning Camp: Character Building for Teens (ages 12-18)
If you dig comics, cartoons, monsters or manga, we will tackle it all. Bring together your drawing skills and imagination to build intriguing characters and tell stories. We will build characters from scratch and learn the basics of panel design, style, proportion, and point of view. We will sketch and trace with pencil, ink up our drawings, and color with markers or watercolors.

Creative Kids Summer Camps (ages 7-11)
Enhance your child's creativity, confidence, and artistic ability while enjoying the beautiful setting of the Northwest Arts Center. Children will explore a variety of art and craft mediums including pottery, painting, three-dimensional art, collage, and watercolor. Day camp activities include time spent in both indoor and outdoor environments. Bring a lunch and water bottle each day. Extended care is not available.

Children's Pottery Camp (ages 7-10 and 10-12)
The young potter will be introduced to a variety of techniques, hand-building and wheel-throwing. Campers will learn the basics of form and balance to create their own style and designs while strengthening motor skills. Materials included. Bring a beverage and nut-free snack. Dress for a mess.

Mega Movie Effects, Junior (ages 7-11)
Explore the world of animation in this beginner movie effects class for younger campers! Work in teams to create a 2-D animated short story, complete with talking heads and other special effects. Produce wacky stop-motion animation videos straight out of your imagination, set to music of your choice. Take home a flash drive with the videos YOU created! Develop not only your techno-IQ but also your social-IQ as you work in teams to develop imaginative plots "greater than the sum of the individuals." Bring a nut-free snack, sack lunch, and water/beverage. Bring a $15 materials fee to be paid to the instructor the first day of camp; this fee is separate from the camp fee.

Mega Movie Effects - Short Session (ages 9-13)

Youth Tech: Gaming and Coding (ages 9-12)
This course combines two unbelievable experiences for students - gaming and coding. Students spend the morning taking an interactive look at coding and building virtual apps to share with friends. In the afternoon, students build simple video games combining the art of video game design and animation to create interactive characters that fly around the screen. Students are encouraged to bring a nut-free snack and sack lunch.

Grow speaking skills through an introduction to the debate process, and learn how to use persuasive and constructive language in presenting your case as well as rebutting your opposition. Modern Manners and Etiquette for Today's Kids

Manners and etiquette are still the key to opportunity and learning to respect and honor others. Students will learn how to speak to adults and friends, be a host and a guest, use proper table manners, start and successfully engage in conversation, and properly use verbal and nonverbal communication including written invitations, thank you notes, gestures, eye contact, cues, texting/phone etiquette and safety... all in a fun, engaging and non-threatening atmosphere. Mini-Kickers Summer Camp (ages 6-10)
Mini-Kickers teaches basic kicks and strikes to young children in an active, fun and positive environment. Dave Arendt is a second-degree black belt who has been studying and teaching Tae Kwon Do for 15 years. He has competed on a national level and coached many students in national tournaments and Junior Olympics. Uniforms may be purchased through the instructor. Sparring equipment is an optional purchase.

Dinosaur Detective Camp (ages 3-5)
Sign up early for this popular summer day camp! Pint-sized paleontologists search for dinosaur eggs, dig for fossils, and have fun exploring the amazing world of dinosaurs. An art project, storytelling, music and a yummy snack rounds out a delightful day of digging. This is a child-only class.

Doodling while listening improves recall and focuses attention. Making a mental map helps anchor experiences and orient the mind in space. Little Learners Play & Grow Camp (ages 2-4)

Fairy Mermaid Camp with Emerald Ballet Theater (ages 4-7)
Join us in the fairy ring at Mermaid Cove! Children explore dance, art, music and literature inspired by mermaids as well as flowers and fairies from classical ballets and nature. Each day camp is split equally between dance and art classes with Emerald Ballet Theater faculty. Camp culminates with an informal performance and gallery of student work.

Taekwondo
Taekwondo is a Korean Martial Arts discipline that emphasizes kicking techniques. It is also an Olympic sport that teaches students to develop the positive aspects of their own personality through respect, courage, self-control, confidence and patience. It is a great workout that involves light contact sparring, self-defense and correct form in a fun and supportive program.

Hatha Yoga
Increase your strength and flexibility through this gentle Hatha Yoga class. This class is for all levels of yoga experience. Let us take care of the details so you can enjoy a stress-free party! Our parties provide an hour of fun-filled activity and an hour in our party room. We provide the friendly and enthusiastic party staff, ample space for your gathering, and a special party gift for the birthday child.

You bring the cake, decorations and the birthday guests. Maximum number varies, depending on facility size and instructor availability.

  • Kids make a small bowl, vase or other item that they can cherish or give to someone.
  • Items will be glazed and fired; host parent will pick up pieces and disperse to guests.

In the event of inclement weather,the Parks & Community Services Department will make every effort to clearly communicate the status of facilities and programs, scheduled special events and rentals. Administration will make an operational decision based upon the safety of participants and employees, and the ability to appropriately staff programs and facilities.

NOTICE: If the Bellevue School District is closed due to inclement weather, all Parks classes and programs are cancelled. However, select facilities may be open for drop-in activities at a modified level. Please call the facility or program area for additional information and weekend program information.
