What did you learn about money as a girl? What was talked about and perhaps more importantly, what was not talked about in your home? These questions will be explored by Bellevue women from around the world at the first Cultural Conversations meeting for the 2013-2014 cycle.
At the gathering, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 1-2:30 p.m., at the Crossroads Community Center, the group will explore how the outlook toward money changes across cultures. How does it vary with age and historical timeframe of your formative years? Participants will hear and share stories about the roles of emotions, personal beliefs and cultural backgrounds when it comes to financial behavior.
The way that you view money can be greatly influenced by culture, social surroundings and your upbringing. The focus of the September meeting will not be about financial management; instead, it will be about the emotional and cultural impacts of attitudes toward money. Watch a "mini conversation" in front of the audience -- three women sharing their experiences growing up in different places in the world. Participants are encouraged to share their stories in small groups afterward and to learn from each other.
Cultural Conversations was launched in 2010 as a partnership between diverse women in the community and the City of Bellevue's Neighborhood Outreach Team. The concept was initiated by women who hoped to develop community connections and enhance their knowledge and understanding of different cultural practices and world views.
Storytelling is the heart of Cultural Conversations. Members see this as an opportunity to experience others' cultures and comprehend various perspectives. This is also a platform for participants to seek understanding among friends and neighbors who are from different ethnic backgrounds. The relaxed and intimate atmosphere creates a unique and safe environment for women to bond and to share.
The group meets about every six weeks from fall to spring. The gatherings are free, with refreshments served, and women of all ages, faiths and cultures are welcome to attend. Meetings are on Tuesdays at the Crossroads Community Center, 16000 NE 10th St.
