The city is taking applications for Bellevue Essentials, the city's civic engagement class. If you're interested, please apply by Friday, July 17.
Billed as an on-ramp for emerging leaders, Bellevue Essentials is a nine-week class designed to give people a grasp of the nuts and bolts of city government. Five alumni of the class have been appointed to city boards and commissions over the last two years.
Class members gain historical perspective, discover the treasures of Bellevue parks and neighborhoods, work through case studies and mock meetings, and meet today's civic leaders. Participants gain a unique understanding of what makes Bellevue tick as well as some new skills to help them become more engaged in the city and the broader community.
Bellevue Essentials seeks participants from diverse interests and backgrounds. The 2014 class reflected the geographic and ethnic make-up of Bellevue. Bellevue Essentials is open to anyone who lives or works in Bellevue, but the city gives preference to residents.
Applicants will be accepted based on the following criteria:
- identification as emerging leaders;
- geographic diversity; and
- a short essay on personal goals of participation in program.
Class size is limited to 35 participants to ensure a quality experience. Bellevue Essentials tuition is $95 per participant, with financial assistance available. Tuition includes all classes, materials and a light meal at each session.
The class is spread over Thursday evening sessions and one Saturday tour day. If you have more questions about Bellevue Essentials, contact Julie Ellenhorn at jellenhorn@bellevuewa.gov.
