The City Council is seeking candidates for an Independent Salary Commission to review salaries of councilmembers. The deadline for applications has been extended to 5 p.m., Monday, May 13.

Salaries for councilmembers were last reviewed and revised in 2016. On Aug. 1, 2016, the council adopted Ordinance No. 6306, creating an independent salary commission structure. That year, the commission met several times to review councilmember salaries and ultimately filed a report with the city clerk establishing revised salaries for the council. After filing the report, the commission disbanded.

The 2024 salary commission will be made up of five volunteers from the community, appointed by the mayor with council concurrence. By Dec. 1, the commission must review and file a salary and compensation schedule for the councilmembers, mayor and deputy mayor with the city clerk. After completing the salary review and filing the report with the city clerk, the salary commission will disband.

All commission members must be residents of Bellevue for at least one year preceding appointment and must be registered to vote in King County, per city code. No officer, official or employee of the city or any of their immediate family members may serve on the commission.

Interviews are anticipated to take place in May. At least one member of the commission should have experience with using competitive benchmarking and comparator data analysis to make decisions, preferably in a compensation or human resource setting. The City of Bellevue values diversity and encourages any interested eligible person to apply.

People who do not want to apply online can pick up applications from the city clerk’s office or Service First desk at City Hall, as well as any of the Bellevue Regional Libraries or Mini City Hall.
