With an air quality alert for smoke from the state Department of Ecology expected to remain in effect for Washington until Wednesday evening, the city is not posting lifeguards at Newcastle, Enatai and Clyde beach parks Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Tuesday Downtown Movie in the Park — "Ferdinand" — was also cancelled.
Unhealthy air has become common across the area due to smoke from wildfires in Canada and eastern Washington. Children, the elderly and individuals with respiratory illnesses are most at risk of serious health effects. If you experience respiratory distress, you should speak with your doctor.
Expect to see some improvement in the air quality late
Wednesday. The smoke should be mostly or completely out of the area by this weekend. The latest air quality conditions and health precautions are available on the Washington Smoke Blog, maintained by state and county agencies.
