Investigators with the Bellevue Police Department have released additional details regarding their investigation into a traffic crash Tuesday that caused the death of a Bellevue toddler on the sidewalk with her mother, waiting to cross the street. Police have also determined the likely cause of the crash.
Investigators have impounded the vehicles involved in the crash, and will complete a forensic mechanical examination of them. Additionally, investigators will download information from the vehicles' onboard computers in an attempt to re-create the circumstances leading up to the crash. Drug or alcohol impairment is not suspected in this crash.
Police have determined that the likely cause of this crash was the driver of the Nissan Sentra failing to yield the right of way to oncoming traffic when making a left turn on a flashing amber left turn arrow from 140th Avenue Northeast onto Bel-Red Road. Police remind drivers that they must yield to ALL oncoming traffic when making a left turn on a flashing yellow arrow.
The city prosecutor will make a decision on criminal charges, if any, that may be filed in this case within the next several days, and the police investigation continues.
