A vehicle fire early this morning destroyed a minivan and damaged another vehicle on the second floor of the Eastgate Park and Ride garage.
At approximately 6:55 a.m., multiple callers reported heavy smoke from the second floor of the park-and-ride. Crews arrived on the scene as people fled from the structure with thick black smoke and flames visible from street level.
Engine 2 utilized its deck gun from the south side of the structure to extinguish a majority of the flames. In addition, 11 sprinkler heads in the structure activated to keep the fire from spreading to surrounding vehicles.
There were no injuries to community members or firefighters. Damage estimates are approximately $10,000 to the vehicle and $500 in contents..
This is a great example of the effectiveness of sprinkler systems minimizing the damage from the spread of fire. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
