Residents and others interested in improving a mile-long stretch of Southeast Newport Way, making it safer for pedestrians, can learn more about design options and offer feedback at an open house.
At the event, scheduled for 5-7 p.m., March 30 at the South Bellevue Community Center, 14509 SE Newport Way, staff will solicit ideas and preferences for features such as a sidewalk or multi-use path on one side of the roadway, crosswalk locations, turn lane placements, street lighting and landscaping. Staff will consider all of the input, develop design concepts and then present them at a second open house this summer.
Many nearby residents, who became part of the city in 2012 with the South Bellevue Annexation, have long wanted improvements on this section of Newport Way, from Somerset Boulevard Southeast to Southeast 150th Avenue.
Currently, there are no crosswalks, sidewalks or bike lanes along much of Southeast Newport Way. People walking or bicycling must navigate narrow shoulders, making access to their destinations difficult. The project is intended to provide better, safer connections to schools, a library and the community center.
Following the identification of a preferred design, environmental studies and permitting, construction on the project is expected to begin in summer 2017. The overall project budget is $8.1 million.
