On Dec. 8, from 1-3 p.m., Bellevue's Cultural Conversations group will meet at the Crossroads Community Center, 16000 NE 10th St., to explore the season of winter storytelling. This month's topic will focus on celebrating the beginning of a new year, sharing cultural traditions and reflecting on family and what one considers "home."
The session will feature Elaine Acacio, the city's diversity inclusion program manager, who will share her story of family rooted in Filipino culture and her experience in the Dominican Republic, studying, living abroad and embracing a new family. Participants will have time to share and listen to each other's stories. Other discussion questions will include:
- How does one honor traditions and rituals in a multicultural family and make room for the new?
- How can we all participate in preserving our stories, by either telling or capturing them in some form?
- What is the effect when we choose whether or not to pass on our stories and traditions?
The event is free, refreshments are available and all women are welcome to attend. If applicable, participants are encouraged to make arrangements for child care.
