Caregiving for an elder is a life passage nearly everyone experiences, either as a caregiver or as the person being cared for.
During the next meeting of Cultural Conversations, a women's group that promotes community connections and cultural understanding, caregiving will be considered. The presentation, called "Eldercare across Cultures: Recognizing the Challenges, Uncovering the Gifts," takes place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at Crossroads Community Center, 16000 NE 10th St.
The meeting is the last Cultural Conversation before the series takes a break for the summer, resuming in the fall.
Through storytelling and conversation, participants will have an opportunity to recognize the difficulties associated with caregiving, but also to share the positive aspects and moments of joy -- the "gifts" -- that caregiving can bring. Some of those expected to take part include young women from cultures where the tradition is to be physically and financially responsible for the care of their elders. Following the stories, women will have more time to share experiences in small groups.
Cultural Conversations was launched in 2010 as a partnership between diverse women in the community and the City of Bellevue. It was initiated by women who had a desire to get better connected with their community and who wanted to enhance their knowledge and understanding of different world views.
Gatherings include women from all around the world. The events are free, refreshments are served and women of all ages, faiths and cultures are welcome. To fully participate, and for the benefit of others, attendees are encouraged to make arrangements for child care.
