At the first Cultural Conversations meeting of the new season, participants will learn why storytelling from the heart is the most powerful way to communicate, profoundly impacting both the storyteller and the listener.
The meeting, with the theme "Storytelling for Change," takes place 1- 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, at Crossroads Community Center, 16000 NE 10th St. Cultural Conversations is a women's group that meets approximately every six weeks and seeks to build community connections and enhance cultural understanding.
At this month's Cultural Conversations meeting, life coach, consultant and small business owner Debbie Lacy will lead a workshop on the power of storytelling. Lacy was co-founder and facilitator of the Eastside Refugee and Immigrant Coalition for nearly 10 years. She is passionate about bridging cultures and improving communication between people and groups.
Those attending the session will participate in small groups to learn how to more comfortably connect and communicate stories. Participants will explore questions such as: Why and when people tell their stories and what prevents them from doing so? Why is it that certain parts of stories stay with the listener? What are the responsibilities of the listener? How does a story that "sticks" have the potential to create change and build community?
Cultural Conversations was launched in 2010 as a partnership between diverse women in the community and the City of Bellevue. The gatherings include women from around the world. Events are free, refreshments are served and women of all ages, faiths and cultures are welcome to attend. To fully participate in the sharing, attendees are encouraged to make arrangements for child care.
