At the next Cultural Conversations gathering on Tuesday, May 19, the women's group will explore the different meanings of gift giving and receiving across cultures, and how the practice among families, friends and co-workers may reflect the changing face of the community.
The meeting and discussion will be 1-2:30 p.m. at Crossroads Community Center, 16000 NE 10th St.
Storytellers will share experiences of both the joy and misunderstandings that can affect relationships when giving and receiving, such as how to determine gift appropriateness, how to handle rejection when a gift is not received with enthusiasm and rebuilding connections that result from hurt feelings. In small groups, attendees will also have an opportunity to discuss personal gift traditions and understand those of others.
Celebrating its fifth year, Cultural Conversations was launched as a partnership between diverse women in the community and the City of Bellevue. It was initiated by women with a desire to get better connected with their community and enhance their understanding of different cultural practices. Gatherings include women from around the world.
The events are free, refreshments are served and women of all ages, faiths and cultures are welcome to attend. To fully participate in the sharing, attendees are encouraged to arrange for childcare.
