Bellevue Police were awarded a $1,500 grant Wednesday by the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation that will help pay for a protective vest for the department's newest police dog, Ozzy. The Bellevue Police Foundation is chipping in the remaining $500.
Ozzy, who finished his initial training in May, has been the only dog in the department's three dog unit without a protective vest.
"We are very appreciative of this generous grant from the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation," Police Chief Steve Mylett said. "Just as our officers wear ballistic vests when they are on patrol, this vest will help protect Ozzy while he is serving the people of Bellevue."
Throughout the 2015-16 NFL season, the Ben Roethlisberger (Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback) Foundation will distribute grants to K-9 units of police and fire departments in the cities and surrounding communities of each regular-season away game for the Steelers. The Steelers play the Seahawks at CenturyLink Field Sunday.
