May is Bike Month, but for Bellevue residents and employees standing on their pedals in anticipation, April offers some great events as well.
Last year, more than 800 people who live or work in Bellevue took part in the "Bike Month Challenge," a regional promotion of bike commuting. Several events are planned as part of "Bike Month in Bellevue:"
- Register for Bike Month Challenge: Bellevue riders can join the regional event, commuting by bike as much as possible during May in a friendly competition organized by Cascade Bicycle Club. Register as a solo rider, to start a team or to join a team of friends, neighbors or coworkers.
- Intro to urban cycling class, Tuesday, April 19, noon-1 p.m.: Cascade Bicycle Club presents the basics of urban cycling. The class will cover clothing, gear, rules of the road and other topics. City Hall, 450 110th Ave. NE. Room 1E-112. Pizza will be provided. RSVP at info@cywb.org.
- Eastside packet pickup bash, Thursday, April 21, 3:30-7 p.m.: Team captains for the Washington Bikes Bike Everywhere Challenge can pick up their swag and network with other team captains and cyclists at Geaux Brewing, 12031 Northup Way. Velofix will offer free minor bike tune-ups. Register at info@cywb.org.
- Bike Everywhere Day, May 20, 6-9 a.m.: Downtown riders can get free coffee, bike swag and a light breakfast supplied by Starbucks and Whole Foods at the Choose Your Way Bellevue bike commuter station at the Bellevue Transit Center. Gregg’s Cycles will offer minor tune-ups. Another station will be at the east end of Interstate 90, near Enatai Park. More locations are shown in a station map.
- Cascade Bicycle Club policy ride, May 25, noon-1:30 p.m. Cascade will lead cyclists on a five-mile lunchtime ride through downtown Bellevue to explore potential new bike routes, part of the city's Pedestrian and Bicycle Implementation Initiative.
