Celebrating the realization of a 30-plus-year vision for the Downtown Park promenade and the addition of a universally accessible playground, the city will hold a grand opening at the park Wednesday, June 28, 3-6 p.m.
Free parking and shuttle service is available to and from Bellevue High School, 10416 Wolverine Way. Look for balloons marking shuttle pick up/drop off sites.
After the city bought most of what is now Downtown Park in 1983, the plan it selected for the park the following year called for a circular promenade and a grand entry on the south side. Finally this year, with funding in part through the 2008 Parks and Natural Areas Levy, the popular, tree-lined pathway actually is a circle.
Also completed as part of the project are: a grand entryway, water feature and terraced seating, stairways and accessible paths. The new Inspiration Playground – made possible through a partnership with the Rotary Club of Bellevue – has interactive features that engage the senses, serving children of all ages and abilities.
The grand opening at Downtown Park, 10201 NE Fourth St., will include a ribbon-cutting and live music from the Seahawks Blue Thunder band and a steel drum band.
