Explore the hidden and surprising stories behind both first and surnames at this month’s installment of Cultural Conversations. The program is taking place on Tuesday, April 24,1-2:30 p.m., and is returning to its regular home at the Crossroads Community Center, 16000 NE 10th St.
Now in its seventh season, Cultural Conversations offers an opportunity for community members to enjoy tea and conversation, and to learn about Bellevue’s thriving diversity.
The program will feature two main speakers. First, a woman who immigrated from China will share why some new residents identify by an English name and the opportunities and challenges it presents. In addition, the history of a naming tradition honoring females in the family will be shared from an African American perspective. The discussion will touch on why generations voluntarily change some names to fit in, while other names may be changed to hide or erase connections to culture and history.
Women of all ages, faiths and cultures are encouraged to attend. To fully participate in the sharing, arrangements for child care are recommended.
