Everyone makes assumptions. It's part of being human and helps provide context. But when it comes to different cultures, assumptions can be limiting if one is unwilling to go beyond appearances.
At the next meeting of Cultural Conversations, a women's group that builds cultural understanding and community connections, the topic will be "Moving Beyond Cultural Assumptions." The event will be 1-2:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 14, at the Crossroads Community Center, 16000 NE 10th St.
At the meeting, long-time Cultural Conversations participants Nura Adam and Janet Clark will lead a conversation on how to "climb out of your own box" to gain new friends and new experiences, and how cultural labeling is a missed opportunity for understanding and community connections. They will also share their own stories, do role play with other participants and facilitate small group conversations.
Now in its fourth year, Cultural Conversations has grown steadily. The program is based on the idea that culture isn't just about holidays, religious traditions or language; it's a lived experience unique to each individual. Storytelling is at the heart of Cultural Conversations and the relaxed atmosphere creates a safe environment for women to bond and share their experiences. The City of Bellevue facilitates the program as a way to build a more cohesive and involved community.
Other topics for the 2014 cycle of Cultural Conversations (subject to change) include: one family, many cultures; cultural translations -- how culture, language and perception impact communication; finding your own voice -- breaking through cultural challenges and expectations; immigration -- the gain and the loss; and cultural attitudes toward aging and elder care.
