Also, Celebrating Boeing's centennial
On Tuesday during the Bellevue City Council's study session, staff provided an initial summary of public feedback received during the recent outreach about potential ballot measures for Fire and Transportation related neighborhood safety projects.
Early survey results, submitted by over 450 residents, showed 69 percent of respondents support transportation-oriented neighborhood safety and connectivity projects for pedestrians, bicycles and vehicles. Likewise, 71 percent indicated they would support additional funding to replace, remodel or seismically strengthen fire stations throughout the city. The city's online survey will be open through July 31 and residents are encouraged to participate.
The potential ballot measures, which have not yet been written or approved for the ballot, would accelerate fire and transportation projects. The council is expected to discuss the topic in-depth at its next meeting on July 11; councilmembers could decide as early as July 25 whether to place one or possibly two separate measures on the November ballot.
A summary of the initial survey results and open house comments is available.
Boeing's centennial celebration
Later in the evening, the council formally recognized the Boeing Company's upcoming centennial celebration and its many contributions to the local community. The official landmark anniversary will occur on July 15.
"Boeing has played a monumental role in shaping the Puget Sound region and Washington state," said Mayor John Stokes in his introductory remarks. "It's always been a big part of our city."
The Seattle-area aerospace giant, founded in 1916, has been a major economic driver for the region. Boeing employs more than 79,000 workers throughout the state and generates over $85.7 billion in economic activity annually. Approximately 2,700 employees are based in Bellevue.
In addition to its economic contributions, Boeing gives to a number of popular local causes. The company donates $53 million a year to various organizations supporting education, health and human services, arts and culture, the environment, and civic engagement.
