In addition to the community center warming centers, the city is helping provide overnight Eastside winter shelters from November 15 through March. The city has leased a portion of the former International Paper site at 1899 120th Ave. N.E. to provide a temporary Eastside Winter Shelter for homeless men. The shelter will open daily through March, 8 p.m.-7:30 a.m. at the site currently owned by Sound Transit.
A women’s shelter will also open on November 15 and is operated by Catholic Community Services through a partnership with The Sophia Way. This shelter will be at the St. Peter's United Methodist Church in Bellevue through the end of January, when it will move to the Redmond United Methodist Church.
For more information about the Eastside overnight winter shelters, contact Congregations for the Homeless at 425-372-7252 or dwightj@cfhomeless.org; or Catholic Community Services at 206-437-7448 or eileenm@ccsw.org.
Cold Weather Safety Tips
Safety is important, and King County Office of Emergency Management offers the following tips for staying safe during cold weather:
- When the snow begins to fall, road conditions can deteriorate very quickly. Drive only if necessary and limit travel to daylight hours if at all possible. Keep others informed of your schedule and route, and stay on main roads. Register for King County road alerts.
- If you ride the bus, register for transit alerts and check our timetable for snow routes.
- Protect your pets by keeping them warm, dry and sheltered with access to non-frozen water.
- Insulate pipes and wrap outdoor faucets with towels and plastic bags to keep them from freezing.
- Be aware that power failures and other service disruptions may occur. Keep a battery operated radio, flashlights and extra batteries on hand.
- Never use charcoal grills, gas grills or generators indoors, because they can cause a buildup of dangerous carbon monoxide gas which can lead to poisoning or even death.
- When leaving the house, dress in layers and wear warm clothing, including a hat, gloves and sturdy footwear, even if just running a quick errand.
