Radar feedback signs to help drivers monitor speeds and slow down
Coal Creek Parkway Southeast, Bellevue’s second busiest street, is getting a new speed limit this week to improve safety, dropping from 40 mph to 35 mph between Factoria Boulevard and the Newcastle city limits, south of Southeast 66th Street.
The new speed limit matches the speed limit on other sections of the street, between Interstate 405 and Factoria Boulevard and in Newcastle to the south.
To help drivers monitor and reduce their speed, new radar feedback signs that display drivers’ speed as they pass by were installed at four locations on Coal Creek Parkway between Factoria Boulevard and Southeast 60th Street. If a driver is well above the posted speed limit, a “Slow Down” message will display. The new speed limit signs on Coal Creek Parkway are also larger and more frequent than other speed limit signs in Bellevue.
Coal Creek Parkway is part of Bellevue’s “High-Injury Network,” a small number (8%) of city streets where most (68%) fatal and serious-injury collisions occur. Between 2016 and 2023, 295 crashes were reported on this 1.8-mile segment of Coal Creek Parkway, killing one person and seriously injuring 13 others.
Bellevue’s Vision Zero initiative aims to eliminate traffic deaths and serious-injury collisions on city streets by 2030. Providing safety improvements on Coal Creek Parkway and other streets on the high-injury network is an important part of achieving this goal.
The City Council approved the Coal Creek Parkway Safety Improvement Project in early 2025, with a state Department of Transportation grant funding the project.
