On Tuesday Bellevue Police and Fire responded to a reported traffic crash at the intersection of 140th Avenue Northeast and Bel-Red Road. Bellevue Police arrived within two minutes. Officers discovered a 28-month-old child that had been struck by a vehicle and killed. Life-saving attempts were made by emergency personnel, however the child died at the scene.
Bellevue Police are currently at the scene investigating, and Bel-Red Road remains closed while police conduct their investigation. Police will be speaking with witnesses, as well as the involved drivers, to determine what caused the crash.
Early indications are that a 1999 Dodge Durango driven by a 29-year-old Kirkland woman was traveling southbound on 140th Avenue. A 2011 Nissan Sentra driven by a 43-year-old Bellevue man made a left turn from the northbound left-turn lane of 140th Avenue and was struck by the Durango.
The Sentra was pushed onto the sidewalk and into a 28-month-old girl who was with her 25-year-old mother, a Bellevue resident. The child was killed in the crash.
Both drivers were transported to Overlake Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Both drivers are cooperating with the investigation. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor in this crash.
The Bellevue Police chaplain, the Fire Department and King County Medical Examiner's Office are assisting the Police with this incident.
