Construction on a new bike lane and median on 108th Avenue Northeast, just north of Main Street, begins on Monday, March 16.
This project will alleviate a safety concern by modifying the existing median and positioning southbound bicycles to the left of right-turning cars. The lane, about 30 feet long, will be colored bright green to improve bicycle visibility for drivers, and a symbol will show bicyclists where to stop to be detected by the traffic signal.
An additional median extension and landscaping will enhance the south gateway to downtown Bellevue on 108th Avenue Northeast, providing a transition between downtown Bellevue and adjacent neighborhoods.
Construction should be completed in April, weather permitting. To accommodate the work, 108th Avenue Northeast will be closed between Northeast Second and Main streets from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The closure will shorten the duration of the construction work and will ensure the safety of crews, pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers. All local driveways will remain accessible. Watch for posted rider alerts at bus stops near the work area.
It is important that drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians use caution when moving through or near the construction zone. Please obey flaggers, police officers and posted signs. Use alternate routes when possible, especially if you are walking or bicycling.
