Bellevue firefighters took three people to area hospitals following a crash involving three vehicles at 9:55 p.m. Thursday. A fourth person was pronounced dead at the accident scene.
The accident occurred in the southbound lanes of Interstate 405, just south of downtown Bellevue.
Bellevue firefighters and police officers arrived at the scene approximately four minutes after getting the 911 call. They found one car by the center divider of the freeway engulfed in fire and two other vehicles with significant damage in two inside lanes of the freeway.
While engine companies extinguished the fire, ladder companies and Medic One crews treated the remaining three people before taking them to local hospitals. The man in the car that was on fire died at the crash scene.
The southbound lanes of I-405 were closed for approximately five hours while Washington State Patrol troopers investigated the accident.
