Bellevue Essentials, the city’s program for emerging neighborhood and community leaders, is now seeking applicants for the 2018 class. An informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 13, 6-7 p.m. in room 1E-112 at City Hall.
Bellevue Essentials is a nine-week introduction to civic engagement. This year’s course will kick off on Sept. 26 and class size is limited to 35 participants. Each year has had a waiting list. Those interested in participating in the program can apply by filling out the online application at https://bellevuewa.gov/bellevue-essentials. The deadline for submissions is Aug. 1.
Participants will learn the nuts and bolts of how city government works from key city staff, elected officials and community leaders. Class topics include history, demographics, diversity, public process, neighborhoods, parks and community services, utilities, planning and development services, budget, transportation, economic development and public safety. The classes include speakers, panels, interactive exercises and site visits.
The immersive program is for individuals who are curious about local government and committed to the future of Bellevue. No experience is needed to qualify and class members have ranged in age from 17 to 70-plus. Enrollment is open to anyone who lives or works in Bellevue, but preference is given to residents. Class tuition is $125 and financial assistance is available. Tuition includes all classes, materials and a light dinner at each session.
