2025 Bellevue Essentials session

Bellevue Essentials is a transformational program that provides an introduction to civic leadership and highlights the structure and daily operations of city government in Bellevue. Topics that are covered during the 10-week course include demographics, public process, diversity, city planning, economic development, human services, utilities, finance and transportation, fire, police and more. Most sessions include homework, a networking dinner and presentations and activities from different city departments.

2026 applications available Monday, April 13!

Accepting applications until Monday, July 13, 5 p.m.

Applicants must live or work in Bellevue. Elected officials and candidates are not eligible to apply. The selection process involves a short application and three essay questions. Acceptance to Bellevue Essentials is highly competitive, as space is limited. Selection is primarily weighted on responses to the application's essay questions. Applicants are encouraged to write thorough and thoughtful responses.

Classes are generally held on Wednesday evenings 5:30-8:30 p.m. with two Thursday evenings and two Saturday afternoon sessions (9 a.m.-3 p.m.)

Graduation will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 2, 7-9 p.m. 

Dinner will be included at all evening sessions. Saturday sessions include lunch. To graduate, attendance is required at 10 of the 12 class sessions. Please check your schedule to make sure you can fully participate.
*Please note that some classes may extend to 9 p.m.

Tuition is $150.00 and due upon acceptance to the program. A tuition waiver is available if needed.

How to Apply

Applications can be completed online in the form below. Paper applications can be returned to City Hall or mailed to Sarina Miller, Neighborhood Outreach, City of Bellevue, 450 110th Ave NE, Bellevue, WA, 98004.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, July 13.

2026 Information Sessions

Join us to learn about the program, hear from graduates and get your questions answered. Sessions will include tips for submitting a successful Bellevue Essentials application. Attendance is beneficial but not required to apply.

  • Wednesday, May 20, noon-12:30 p.m. (Virtual - link will be sent after registration)
  • Thursday, June 18, 6-6:30 p.m. (at Crossroads Community Center)
  • Monday, June 29, 6-6:30 p.m. (at Bellevue City Hall)

Please answer each question thoroughly in approximately 100 words per question. Assistance with your application/essays is available on request. Contact Sarina Miller at samillersamiller@bellevuewa.gov to request assistance and please indicate if you have a language or culture preference.

Essays can be typed or written as a separate word document or verbally in an MP3 audio file emailed to samiller@bellevuewa.gov. Maximum of 100 words per question. If you prefer to send hard copy, mail to Sarina Miller, City of Bellevue, Neighborhood Outreach, 450 110th Ave NE, Bellevue, WA 98004.
