Artist Humaira Abid, whose exhibition at the Bellevue Arts Museum (BAM) explores the stories contained in domestic objects, will kick off the conversation about treasured personal items at a Cultural Conversations gathering scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 5.
Participants are invited to bring things they associate with a deeper cultural meaning to the event that’s happening 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the Crossroads Community Center, 16000 NE 10th St. In small groups, they can each share the story behind the item. Cultural Conversations is Bellevue’s popular women’s discussion group aimed at increasing cultural understanding and connection.
The idea for this gathering was inspired by former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright’s exhibit a few years ago at the museum, “Read My Pins: Stories from a Diplomat’s Jewel Box.” While jewelry as an expression of culture is one example, an item chosen for this event could be any object.
As part of her exhibition “Searching for Home” at BAM through March, Abid has crafted astoundingly detailed sculptures that capture the compelling stories of refugees and their journeys. At the Cultural Conversations gathering, the artist, who immigrated from Pakistan, will give a glimpse of how her culture and experiences, along with challenging global issues, inspire her art.
The event is free and a light lunch will be served. Women of all ages, faiths and cultures are welcome to attend. To fully participate in the sharing, arrangements for child care are recommended.
