The Traffic Signal Operations team is piloting traffic signals with “rest in red” technology where the signal for the major street approach remains in the red indication at an intersection when no vehicles are detected. The goal of the "rest in red" operation is to enhance safety and reduce speeding during periods of low traffic volume.
"Rest in red" technologies have been deployed in other cities such Portland, OR and Albuquerque, New Mexico to help reduce excessive speeding on wide, open corridors during late night and early morning hours—which can contribute to deadly crashes.
When a person driving a vehicle approaches a “rest in red” intersection along major street approach, the traffic signal may stay red until it detects that the driver reached the intersection.
Current pilot locations:
- BelRed Road and NE 30th between 10:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. effective September 13, 2024 - November 13, 2024
