    Applicants must be 21 years of age who can read and speak fluent English and either be: 

    • A U.S. Citizen,
    • Lawful permanent resident, or

    One of the best places to be a police officer

    One of the largest and fastest-growing cities in Washington, Bellevue is one of the best places to work as a police officer. The department has a tradition of success, as Bellevue enjoys an exceptionally low crime rate and is one of the safest cities in the Northwest. For a department its size, Bellevue's force offers the opportunity to serve in many specialized positions. 

    The Bellevue Police Department serves a population of approximately 151,500 in a roughly 33-square mile area. The city is bordered by Kirkland and Redmond to the north, Renton and Newcastle to the south, Issaquah to the east, and Clyde Hill, Medina and Mercer Island to the west.

    Currently, the department has budgeted 206 commissioned officers along with 50 professional personnel. Commissioned ranks are, in ascending order: officer, corporal, sergeant, captain, major, assistant chief and chief. The Police Chief is appointed by the city manager.

    After two to three years of service, officers may be eligible to apply for specialties, depending on the position. Service time at other departments may be considered after the probationary period is passed.

    Take-home vehicle program for all commissioned personnel.

    Full-time specialty sections for commissioned personnel within the department include:

    • Accident investigations
    • Motorcycle traffic enforcement
    • Community Crisis Assistance Team (CCAT)
    • Community station officer
    • Detective - violent crimes, property crimes, fraud
    • K-9 unit

    • Crowd control
    • Hostage negotiator

    Lateral Police Jobs

    Successful lateral candidates may be eligible for a signing bonus up to $30,000. Lateral officers' starting pay is $115,000, PLUS incentives and numerous overtime opportunities. 

    Additional benefits include: 

    • Up to $7,500 in moving expenses (only for out-of-state applicants)

    Entry Police Jobs

    NEW higher starting pay for entry-level officers is $7,987/month or $95,850 per year, PLUS incentives and numerous overtime opportunities. Most of our Officers make over $150,000 per year, including incentive pay and overtime. 

    • $1,000 bonus pay after successfully completing Field Training
    • $1,000 bonus pay after three years of employment

    Exceptional Entry

    Officers with academy certification but less than two years experience. Successful exceptional entry candidates may be eligible for a $10,000 signing bonus.

    Police Support Officers

    Police Support Officers provide support to the Police Department in the areas of prisoner transport, taking crime reports, calls for assistance of a non-criminal nature, and other activities which do not require a fully commissioned officer. 

    Police Support Officers are uniformed, unarmed and partially commissioned to exercise physical restraint, assist with warrant service, and issue parking citations.

    There are 256 positions within the Bellevue Police Department, 206 commissioned officers, and 50 professional positions. The professional staff positions are in every department, including records, property and evidence, investigations, patrol, personnel services and administration.     Victim Advocate

    The Victim Advocate acts as a professional liaison between the police department and the prosecutor’s office, delivering dedicated support and advocacy for domestic violence survivors. This role focuses on addressing safety concerns, providing critical services throughout the prosecution process, connecting survivors with appropriate community resources, and works to ensure their rights are upheld within the criminal justice system.
