The city’s Winter Event Response Map provides information on the progress of snow and ice response efforts in the City of Bellevue during winter weather conditions. This map uses data from GPS technology attached to the city winter response fleet (snowplow, sander, deicer, etc.) to determine if a road was recently serviced.
Please note that even if the map shows a road as recently serviced, it does not guarantee that the street is passable for all vehicles. After servicing, streets may still have ice, snow or slush on them. Always use caution when driving in winter conditions. You can also visit our Bellevue Traffic Map to look at feeds from traffic cameras across the city, which can assist in determining road conditions.
Note: The winter weather response map is only activated during citywide weather events.
More information
What does serviced mean? Why is the map showing a section of the roadway that is serviced, but there is still snow or ice on the road, or only one side of the road is serviced?
To determine if a roadway has been “serviced,” this map uses GPS tracking to determine if a vehicle with winter response equipment (snowplow, sander, deicer, etc.) has driven along a section of roadway. However, the winter response vehicle may not have completed clearing both directions of a road or may have been passing through (for example, on their way to service a different street). The system does not know the amount of snow or ice on the roadway.
Why is the map showing a section of roadway as serviced when only one lane has been cleared?
During ice and snow conditions, the city strives to provide passable routes for emergency, commercial and private vehicles on the city’s public roads. During a major winter weather event, the city might not have enough resources to fully clear snow and ice from all lanes and may dedicate resources to service just one lane in each direction.
Why is the map not showing neighborhood streets?
We are only showing primary and secondary arterials as defined in the city’s snow response priorities map. We are still piloting this tool and testing it. We anticipate that future updates will include all snow response routes.
How often is the data refreshed?
The data is refreshed every 15 minutes. The map shows whether a road has been serviced in the past two or six hours. The data does not update more frequently because it takes time for staff to service a roadway. This helps limit the possibility of a partially-serviced road being shown as “serviced” while it is still in progress.
What are the city's priorities for clearing roads in Bellevue?
The city's snow response priorities map shows which city streets will be serviced first. The city's Transportation, Police and Fire departments work together to create the map. The focus is on community health and safety and on doing the most good for the most people.
During a snow storm, major streets and neighborhood priority routes are cleared first to accommodate fire, medical and police response, as well as transit, school buses and commuter traffic. If snowfall is continuous, those arterials may require repeated plowing and sanding before crews can clear neighborhood streets. Please note that the city does not service any private roads.
How can I provide feedback or report issues with the map?
If you have any feedback or would like to report an error or inaccuracy, please respond to our survey. We are testing this system and will continue to make improvements.
