Cultural Conversations - "What's in a name?"
Crossroads Community Center 16000 NE 10th St, WA
In April’s Cultural Conversations, we will explore the hidden and surprising stories behind our names. One storyteller who immigrated from China will share why some newly-arrived choose to identify by an American name and the opportunities and challenges that presents. We’ll also hear the perspective of an African-American, sharing the history of a naming tradition honoring females in her family, at time when knowing and holding on to your identity meant everything. While some names are changed to fit-in, we will also explore the experience across generations, where family names may tell a cultural story which one may not want others to know.
Please join us for tea and conversation and experience connection with others in your community. Women of all ages, faiths and cultures are welcome to attend. To fully participate in the sharing, attendees are encouraged to plan arrangements for childcare. Please RSVP to Carol Ross at cross@bellevuewa.gov or 425-452-7917.
