South Bellevue Community Center will celebrate its 20th anniversary with community festivities Jan. 5-11. Free fitness classes and drop-in sports, giveaways and special activities will mark the occasion, honoring loyal participants and memories made over two decades and welcoming new participants.
The whole range of SBCC activities—including jazzercize, pickleball, badminton and Zumba—will be available. The week’s schedule is available at BellevueWA.gov/sbcc.
In 2005, SBCC opened after more than seven years of anticipation and community involvement. A resident advisory committee was appointed in 1998 to work with the community to make recommendations on the location, design and function of the center. With a focus on providing opportunities for children, youth and teens, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Bellevue has operated the center in partnership with the city since its beginning.
“This center has always been about people at its core,” said Parks & Community Services Director Michael Shiosaki. “It’s about connection, community and creating a third place that people want to come back to again and again.”
Located next to Eastgate Park at 14509 SE Newport Way in the Eastgate neighborhood, the center has grown alongside the community it serves. Parks & Community Services uses the center to offer programs for preschoolers, adults, older adults and families, with the goal of building a healthy community.
Beyond classes and fitness, SBCC is a place where the community gathers for celebrations, meetings and events that bring neighbors together.
SBCC is a place to stay active, try something new and feel supported at every stage of life. As the center turns 20, its mission to support a healthy community by providing accessible opportunities for recreation, fitness, education and celebrations endures.
