COVID-19 has shifted the ways people engage with one another, but connecting across cultures and experiences remains vital to the mission of the City of Bellevue to welcome the world and see diversity as a key strength. A collection of family immigration histories as told by city staff members through video is now available. The “My Story” virtual exhibit celebrates diverse experiences, unique journeys and 26 years of work done at the City of Bellevue to recognize and advance equitable and inclusive programs that help build community.
The “My Story” project began in 2018 with physical display boards at city facilities showcasing a collection of immigrant and migrant stories from employees sharing their own or their family’s journey to the Pacific Northwest. This year the exhibit transitioned to a virtual format for alumni of previous exhibits to narrate their personal history, including family legacies and stories of personal resilience through adversity.
The 2020 “My Story” exhibit is made possible by the city’s Diversity Advantage Initiative in partnership with Welcoming America and national Welcoming Week. The “My Story” exhibit provides a unique opportunity for viewers to learn, connect across differences, and take joint action to achieve a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive community.
In addition to the exhibit web page, the “My Story” videos are also accessible on the Bellevue Television YouTube channel.
