Each May, communities around the world recognize Building Safety Month – an international campaign dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of building safety. The 2026 theme, “Built to Last” highlights how thoughtful planning, informed choices and resilient building practices help create safer, stronger and more accessible communities for everyone.
For Bellevue’s Development Services Department, this month provides the opportunity to highlight the everyday work we do to uphold the quality, safety and integrity of the built and natural environment. Our vision, Building the Best Bellevue, Together, reflects a long-standing commitment to ensuring that the city continues to grow in ways that supports safety, sustainability and community well-being. From reviewing permit applications to conducting inspections and ensuring compliance with city codes, our staff works diligently to ensure that Bellevue’s growth and development support a safe, sustainable and responsibly managed community for everyone.
A key focus of Building Safety Month is shining a spotlight on the professionals who help keep our community safe. Our building inspectors, plan reviewers, code specialists and permit staff play essential roles in ensuring that construction meetings rigorous safety standards. These professionals are trained to evaluate compliance with codes and standards, ensuring that buildings serve the needs of all residents.
During Building Safety Month, we invite the community to learn more, check out the resources available from the International Code Council and join us in celebrating the systems and people who help make Bellevue a safe, sustainable and thriving place to call home.
