With this summer looking to be one of the driest and hottest here in recent memory, the possibility of a dangerous fire starting in greenbelts or yards will be much higher. Bellevue Fire has suggestions for minimizing the risks.
Western Washington has historically been well-saturated, with heavy snow pack in the mountains and heavy rainfall in the spring. With little to no snow pack in the mountains this year and drought conditions throughout the state, some Bellevue firefighters are training to be able to battle blazes in woodland or open space.
Actions you can take to help prevent fires this summer include:
- Leave the fireworks to the professionals. Fireworks are illegal in all of the communities protected by Bellevue Fire -- Bellevue, Beaux Arts Village, Clyde Hill, Hunts Point, Medina, Newcastle and Yarrow Point.
- Use caution with any open flame (barbecue grills, tiki torches, free-standing fire pits). Never leave these unattended, and keep a hose or fire extinguisher close by.
- Properly dispose of cigarette butts.
- Take care when using power equipment (weed trimmers, chain saws, etc.) in dry grass.
- Never use weed burners.
- Firewise offers great ideas on how to protect your home with some simple planning and a review of your home's surroundings.
