Light rail road crossing in BelRed

Trains running more frequently in advance of starter line opening

The next phase of light rail testing, with operators but no passengers, started Wednesday as Sound Transit prepares its Eastside “Starter Line” for service.

Residents will notice trains running more often between the South Bellevue and Redmond Technology stations, the “starter” portion of Sound Transit’s Link 2 Line anticipated to begin operating in spring 2024. The 2 Line, formerly known as East Link, will eventually connect to Mercer Island and Seattle.

In addition to testing, Sound Transit is training operators and maintenance staff. The 2 Line crosses streets at several locations in the BelRed area. People walking, rolling and driving should be aware that trains may be moving along the tracks at any time, day or night.

Sound Transit provides the following tips for staying safe at rail crossings:

    • Look both ways before crossing, even if a train has just passed. Trains come from both directions.
    • Stay alert! Remove headphones and put screens down.
    • Always use crosswalks and pay attention to crossing signals.
    • When riding a bicycle or using a wheeled mobility device, always cross tracks at a 90-degree angle. This prevents your wheels from getting stuck.

Simulated service – trains running at full frequency without passengers – is scheduled to start in early 2024.
